Tallow Lamps in Northern Europe

In early 2025 I looked into the history of animal-fat-burning lamps in northern Europe. I made reproductions of Viking-age and Anglo Saxon ceramic tallow lamps using clay I dug and fired myself. Photos below show the green and fired results. My full article about these lamps was published in The Oak, the Arts & Sciences newsletter of the SCA Kingdom of Atlantia.

Eirik is the SCA persona I made. Conveniently, he lives exactly a thousand years ago, which helps me focus on a specific time frame when I am researching projects to learn more about this interesting period in history.
